Music in the Pre-Prep Department
Music in the Pre-Prep department is co-ordinated by Mrs Barbara Dix and Mrs Sian Ford, who leads the boys in singing once a week.
“Our aim is to have fun and make music to perform.”
Shell boys have one music lesson per week focussing on singing, action rhymes and simple percussion work. Songs are linked to the termly topics, our annual Christmas production and a Summer concert/production.
In Year 1 the aim is for the boys to have a small yet secure pitch range and to be ableto sing short sections on their own and with others with confidence and expression. They will begin to sing with a sense of awareness of pulse and control rhythm, making connections between symbols and sounds showing understanding of how sounds go higher and lower. We aim for the boys to be able to recognise different instruments of the orchestra by sight and sound and to have a basic understanding of how each instrument creates its sound and be able to identify the 'family' from which each instrument comes. They will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and use recorded music appropriately.
The boys will perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians. They explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. They will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and use recorded music appropriately. There is an expectation that they will progress to the next level of musical excellence.
Boys in Year 1 have the opportunity to take individual violin lessons. In Year 2 piano is offered as well as violin lessons.
Pre-Prep has a choir for boys in Years 1 and 2. It is non-selective and each year takes part in the Godalming Music Festival, held in Charterhouse Chapel.
In Lent Term each year, all boys who play a musical instrument take part in an informal music concert presided over by Mrs Sian Ford and Mrs Dix.
Bi-annually Pre-Prep holds a public concert celebrating the musical work of the boys from Years 1 and 2. This is usually centred on a theme and includes both ensemble items and individual performances.
Each Christmas Pre-Prep produces a Nativity play for public performance. All boys from Nursery to Year 2 are involved. Every two years there is a major production involving all the Pre-Prep boys.
