SATRO Problem Solving Challenge
On the 26th of January, six year 7 boys went to the SATRO Problem Solving Challenge at Heathside School.
This was the regional competition, and the winners in each age group would go through to the national final. We were tasked with making a marble run which would make the marble take 10 seconds to get down and then, at the end, would light up an LED. We were given one and a half hours to complete it and given limited amounts of resources to complete it.
We got off to a good start and had a clear idea of what we were going to build. It was all coming along nicely and with 10 minutes to go, we had a working marble run and light. However, in the last minutes of the challenge, we added some blue tack to slow the marble down and so it would take 10 seconds. This was our downfall though as in doing this we had to tamper with some of the other parts of the marble run. This caused the marble to come of the rail we had built.
With a bit of tampering after our judgment, we got it all working. We all enjoyed the competition and we all wish to go next year and try to improve on this years’ model.
